Criminal lawsuit against FIFA president Gianni Infantino

A special Swiss prosecutor has launched a criminal case against FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

The news agency AP reports that the case is related to a "secret meeting" between the FIFA chief and Swiss Attorney General Michael Lauber.

In June 2016, Lauber met with Infantino at a hotel in Bern. They did not say anything about what was discussed between them at that time. Both later said that they did not remember what was discussed between them. It was their third meeting in 15 months.

Prosecutor Stefan Keller is investigating allegations that Infantino and Swiss Attorney General Michael Lauber have "evidence of illegal activity".

Meanwhile, Lauber resigned last week. The court recently ruled that Lauber's information to officials in charge of an investigation into corruption against FIFA was confidential, a lie, and any attempt to cover up a meeting with Infantino. He then decided to resign.

Both of them, however, insisted that they had not done anything wrong.

He resigned last Tuesday, according to Lauber's office. He was to hold the post till August 31.

A statement from Swiss authorities said Keller had also filed criminal charges against Infantino and Ronaldo Arnold, a regional prosecutor. And sought approval to prosecute Lauber.

Infantino took over as FIFA president in February 2016, succeeding former President Jeep Blatter, who was accused of corruption and was later banned. He is currently in his second term as head of the governing body of world football.
